THE LAND OF CRANES
The crested crane usually considered as the grey crowned crane is one of the commonest bird species in Uganda that you will find in almost all birding spots during your Uganda safari and many birders never want to miss out on it because of its stunning beauty, humility and many more of its interesting facts which include the following.

The crested crane is among the tallest birds with height of about one meter and a wing span of two meters. An adult one weighs about 3.5 kg which is light enough to enable it to fly.

The crested crane is also the national bird of the Republic of Uganda and on your Uganda safari, you will note that it is found in the national flag and on the national court of arms.

This bird belongs to genus ‘Balearica’, species ‘regulorum’ and sub species ‘gibbericeps’ so its scientific name is Balearica regulorum gibbericeps.

The crested crane is also known for its distinct honking sound that it usually makes more so in the mating season. This sound is different from that of all other crane species and luckily, you will hear it during your birding safari in Uganda.

It builds its nests in trees where the night is spent and during day, the crested crane usually resides amongst herds of cattle as a way of shadowing away from potential predators mainly dogs.

The crested crane is grouped under omnivores feeding on insects, frogs, worms, plants seeds, leaves, snakes, small fish among others and it spends much of the day time searching of these food items.

Usually, the adult female lays two to five eggs and the incubation role is done by both the male and female till at the end of 30 days when they hatch as well as caring of the young ones till maturity of 3 years, all in a way of sharing parental roles.

Crested cranes stay with one breeding partner for life and it is indeed amazing how monogamy is actively practiced among these birds. The bonds that they form from when they are young are the ones they maintain for life breeding and looking after their young ones.

This beautiful bird has a life span of up to 22 years and this is quite longer compared to other birds that you will encounter on your Uganda birding safari like the song birds that live up to two years.
