🇬🇧 Inside the 152,000-square-metre stadium, a large pit is being constructed that will hold a new pitch removal and storage system.
The retractable pitch will be housed in six underground levels that reach a depth of over 25 metres and feature an underground irrigation system, as well as ultraviolet lighting for the pitch grass. This design will allow the stadium to also be used for other events, such as baseball and tennis matches, with the grass divided into wide ribbons that are slotted underneath the stadium floor and elevated by hydraulic lifts when needed.
When the renovation is complete Santiago Bernabéu will also be used to hold concerts and will have a capacity of 85,000 visitors, up from its current number of 81,044.
One of the world’s best-known stadiums, the Santiago Bernabéu was originally built in 1947 and designed by architects Manuel Muñoz Monasterio and Luis Alemany Soler. It is currently the second-largest stadium in Spain.
🇪🇸 En el interior del estadio, de 152.000 metros cuadrados, se está construyendo un gran foso que albergará un nuevo sistema de extracción y almacenamiento del terreno de juego. El campo retráctil se alojará en seis niveles subterráneos que alcanzarán una profundidad de más de 25 metros y contarán con un sistema de riego subterráneo, así como con iluminación ultravioleta para el césped del campo. Este diseño permitirá que el estadio se utilice también para otros acontecimientos, como partidos de béisbol y tenis, con el césped dividido en anchas cintas que se encajarán bajo el suelo del estadio y se elevarán mediante ascensores hidráulicos cuando sea necesario.
Cuando concluya la renovación, el Santiago Bernabéu se utilizará también para celebrar conciertos y tendrá capacidad para 85.000 espectadores, frente a los 81.044 actuales.
