⚽ INSIGHT OF THE WEEK | THE FOOTBALL SIFU
WHO REPRESENTS THE COACH?
In African football, we talk a lot about players having agents and managers who help them find clubs, negotiate contracts, build their careers and open doors internationally.
But here is a question I keep asking:
Where are the managers or agents for coaches? 🤔
A talented grassroots coach can spend years studying, obtaining coaching qualifications, developing players, winning competitions and building a football philosophy — yet still struggle to get opportunities beyond his immediate environment.
And sometimes, it isnt because the coach lacks ability.
It is because nobody is opening the door.
If coach managers and agencies exist, how does a grassroots coach in Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania or elsewhere in Africa actually find them?
Where do we register?
Who represents us?
How do we submit our coaching CVs?
How do clubs discover coaches who are ready for the next level?
And perhaps the biggest question:
Why dont coach managers advertise opportunities the way player agents do?
Imagine a platform where a coach could create a professional profile containing:
🔹 Coaching qualifications
🔹 Experience
🔹 Clubs worked with
🔹 Coaching philosophy
🔹 Tactical identity
🔹 Achievements
🔹 Player-development record
🔹 References
🔹 Video analysis & training sessions
Then clubs, academies and professional teams could identify coaches based on ability, philosophy and experience, rather than simply who they know.
Grassroots coaches have talent too.
We shouldnt have to wait until someone "knows someone" before our careers can move forward.
Football is becoming increasingly professional.
The management of coaches must also become professional.
Maybe Africa doesnt just need more coaching courses.
Maybe Africa needs a stronger coach representation and recruitment ecosystem.
So I ask fellow coaches, sporting directors, club owners and football administrators:
DO COACHES NEED AGENTS/MANAGERS?
And if they do...
